The Philadelphia Eagles continue to remain in contact with Jason Peters who is open to a return to Philadelphia, however, there is some competition for arguably the best offensive tackle available on the free agent market. While Peters and the Eagles remain in contact, there are a few other teams monitoring the market on the 38-year-old left tackle. NFL Network's James Palmer said the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets and Denver Broncos are teams that are lurking. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo also provided an update on Peters' free agency and he made it clear the former Pro Bowl left tackle believes he can play into his 40s -- similar to what Tom Brady accomplished with the New England Patriots and now the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"He's sending out workout videos letting people know he feels really good, he's moving pretty good -- and the Eagles kind of knew this," Garafolo said. "When the Eagles announced two months ago they were moving on basically from Peters, they still left the door open for a possible return."
Garafolo added on to reports last week that Peters is still in contact with the Eagles, as NBC Sports Philadelphia's Derrick Gunn went as far as saying "Peters wants to be in Philadelphia, the Eagles want Jason Peters here. It's only a matter of time until they get something done."
Jets general manager Joe Douglas is very familiar with Peters after spending the past three seasons in the Eagles' front office, understanding Peters' health and how he was able to play at a high level when healthy. The Jets have been committed to revamping their offensive line this offseason as Peters would be a veteran tackle to mentor first-round pick Mekhi Becton.
The Broncos could use some assistance at tackle after declining Garett Bolles' fifth-year option and Ja'Wuan James coming off torn ligaments in his knee in the first game after signing a four year, $51 million deal the previous offseason (the injury limited James to three games). Denver added skill position players to help out Drew Lock, but parts of the offensive line remain a concern.
Cleveland has been linked to Peters for some time, even though the Browns inked Jack Conklin to a three year, $42 million deal this offseason and drafted Jedrick Wills at No. 10 overall. Like the Jets with Becton, Peters can mentor Wills in case he isn't ready for Week 1 with the limited offseason program going on.
If Peters were to return to the Eagles, he would be a veteran backup to Andre Dillard -- not a starter like he was the prior 11 seasons. Peters would be an insurance policy in case Dillard suffers an injury and would provide much-needed depth at tackle behind Dillard and Lane Johnson.
